This beautiful hand woven rug is being raffled by the Denman Conservancy Association (DCA) as a fund raiser for Central Park, a wonderful 147 acre property across from the Old School Centre. This rug, which its creators call "Island Palette", is 40 inches by 96 inches and is made of hand-dyed recycled wool blankets.
In conceiving this prized rug, the Denman Island Spinners and Weavers used strips of blankets that they had washed, dyed, and torn. Hand-dyed linen was used for the warp; measured and threaded through "heddles" and the reed on a loom. After lovingly weaving the strips, a wonderful display of blues and greens resulted which reflect the island's palette of colours.
The rug will be displayed at the Denman Island Craft Store during April and at Abraxas in May and early June. In mid-June it will appear in the Community Hall where tickets will be sold during the annual House and Garden Tour. The draw of the winning ticket will take place the evening of June 17.
Consider buying a ticket. Just 500 will be sold at $10 each. By doing so you will be helping the Conservancy and Central Park. This essential wetland (in which Trumpeter Swans were seen sunning themselves this spring) for resident and migrating birds as well as resident wildlife will be accessible and enjoyed by the entire community.
Off-island supporters who are unable to visit Denman before the draw, but still wish tickets may contact me directly.
