DEPARTURE OF FLEET

On December 16, 1907, the Atlantic Fleet departed from Hampton Roads, Virginia. At 11:15 the fleet passed the Mayflower, President Theodore Roosevelt's Yacht, anchored at the Tail of the Horseshoe in Lower Chesapeake Bay, in review, each ship firing a 21-gun salute to the President.

The Atlantic battleship fleet had been assembled in Hampton Roads in connection with the Jamestown Exposition during early June 1907. Shortly thereafter there were rumors that the fleet would visit the West Coast (via Magellan Strait). The rumors were confirmed on August 23rd by Secretary Loeb when he announced that the fleet would start for San Francisco in December. The destroyer flotilla (torpedo flotilla) were also to journey to the West Coast but would not be travelling with the battleships. The flotilla departed on December 2, 1907, and travelled to San Francisco and then were detached from the rest of the voyage.
