Samara & Bucca

Of our two Samoyeds, Samara, is the seventh in an unbroken line going back nearly half a century and Bucca is number nine (we briefly adopted Casper - number eight - in her declining months); neither dog is shown or placed in similar competitions and we have no pretensions of becoming breeders. Samoyeds are ideal pets, being friendly and gentle by nature - that's why we have had that unbroken line of Sams! Samara excels at being a Therapy Dog and surpassed 500 visits to seniors and the infirm in June, 2008.

'Major' was acquired at the age of eight weeks in 1956 and lived until 'Tanya' (Du-Bi-Nor's Tonya) came along in 1969. She lived until 1982 and there was a three-week gap before 'Duchess' (Polobar's Peppermint Patty) arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, she died at the age of five and that is when we got into Samoyed Rescue. Fourteen-month-old 'Scoobie' (you can't pick a new name if he already has it memorized!) was obtained from the Etobicoke Dog Pound, near Toronto, and he got to see the World. His biography is well worth reading! In his 12 years with us, Scoobie lived in three different provinces and three different countries. Although he was greatly missed when he passed away in 1998, 'Kara'' had already arrived on the scene. She wasn't too happy being an only dog and was delighted when 'Sunshine' moved in. Sunshine stayed as the 'junior dog' until we adopted Samara. Sunshine succumbed to cancer in January, 2003, just after her sixth birthday. Kara became a most successful St.John Ambulance Therapy Dog; alas, she was snatched from us in June, 2003, by "GDV" while too far from veterinary help to be saved.

[Samara]

Samara arrived at our home in March, 2001. She was supposed to be a 'foster dog' until we found a home for her, as her owner had been forced to give her up. She quickly established herself as a permanent resident. Samara was born in Washington State April 1, 2000. After she and her sister failed to sell for $50.00 each, she was offered free to a good home and eventually was collected by Washington Samoyed Rescue. After being fostered in several homes, she was placed with a good home in Victoria. Unfortunately, circumstances conspired against her new owner and she came under the wing of Canadian Samoyed Rescue. She loves everybody and certainly has a "licker licence". She will never be as large as Kara (we hope!) and weighs 57lbs (26 Kg).
Samara passed her St.John Ambulance Therapy Dog trials on December 8, 2002. She has already recorded her first 'save', inspiring a lady who had given up on life to carry on. As of this date, in addition to the more than 500 visits "under her collar" she is used as a demonstration dog and assists in the evaluations of new Therapy Dogs. We toured Europe for five and a half months with Samara and she has her own passport and has visited 14 countries - not bad for a 'rescue'!

[Bucca]

Bucca is too noisy to be a Therapy Dog, but she is a great companion for Samara during her 'off duty' times. Officially, she is 'Summerhills Pure Joy'and we adopted her when she could no longer stay with her original family. She was clearly well-loved, so has none of the problems neglected dogs sometimes suffer from. She is a rather large dog for a female, topping 74 pounds (almost 34 Kg)

'Mufasa' and 'Keisha' arrived in our house late in June, 2003 as 'long-term foster dogs' for two years while their owners were out of the country. No sooner had they left than Panda and Rio showed up at our door! They found a new home in about three months, though! Since getting involved in Samoyed Rescue, we have participated in 30 'rehomings', fostered 14 dogs and adopted five.
