The Ideas are Created Here!

Paul Kerr -Bio

I'm Paul Kerr from Buffalo, NY and I majored in Media Communications at a small private institute called Medaille College. I took my classes in the early 80's, well before all this Internet technology was available. The Internet is really a new form of media that will drastically change the way we communicate and how we view media in general.
I took an interest in Photography in high school, and I held that interest into my college years. I had some Internships with some of the great photography sources in Buffalo. I had one with an arial photographer, that was quite an experience... especially one morning when there was an Industrial fire in the south towns and he took me with him to do a fly over and shoot it. There's nothing like being in a small plane when the pilot goes into a steep bank and says, "here grab the controls while I take a few shots of this".
I did survive all my Internships and did get a job in the photographic industry. I presently work for a professional photofinishing lab and Imaging Center. As far as the next ten years are concerned, I plan on using my general knowledge of Media Communications and my visual talents to ride the crest of this new medium. I then plan on having a mid-life crisis and try out as quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, take them all the way to the Superbowl, and actually WIN IT!
As I jog off the field, I am going to look right into the camera and say...

"I'm going to Disney Land!"

Joseph D. Korman -Bio

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Living at end of the Brooklyn trolley and elevated train era, I became interested in trains (and actually wanted to be a trolley motorman). I attended Brooklyn Technical High School (1966). By that time I found that I enjoyed math and I had visions of becomming a math teacher. I attended the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (1970,72).

It was there, as a Math Major, that I discovered that theoretical math was NOT for me. In my sophomore year, I discovered that Poly had a MS program in TRANSPORTATION PLANNING with classes devoted to public transit. My first thought, 'I can get a Master's Degree in TROLLEYS? WOW!'.

I made an appointment to see the head of the TP department (which had been created the previous year). He was eager to get students, so he guided me through the remaining time to my bachelor's in Math and accepted me in the MS program. By the time I started the program, one or two PhD candidates had been graduated from the TP program.

Because of my hobby interest in subways, trolleys, and railroads, I breezed through the public trainsit related courses. Unfortunately there were also highway and road design classes as well as finacial planning (BIG UGH!) classes that were required. I managed to get the degree.

Because of the Viet Nam War, I enroled in ROTC while at Poly and I want on active duty in 1971 (but for only 3 months). I was able to get a job with the NYC Transit Authority in March of 1972. I am now in my 25th year with them.

I started as an anylist in the Subway Department and got hands on experience in all aspects of the system (Operations, Car and Track Maintenance, and Budget (BIG UGH!). In 1981, I was asked to look into Word Processing technology and recommend a system to replace the IBM Selectrics that were in use.

This lead to the second part of my career, computers. I found that the machines were getting smaller and more powerful and that I liked programming. I spearheaded dragging the Subway Department and later the Buses Department into the computer age.
The system I designed controls the crew assignments, timekeeping and personnel control for the 19 bus garages in New York. The system runs on the proprietory WANG Operating System and must now be replaced. A project team has been assembled to build a system that will work for Buses and Subways (the Subway's system in worse shape being on a PR1ME computer).

I have been married for 21 years and we have two teenagers.

The next ten years I would like to see the new system running smoothly. I will then retire from computers and start my third career and become a
Trolley Motorman!

Rachel Shreckengast -Bio

Hi everyone! I'm Rachel and live in Freeland, Pennsylvania. I could regale you with tales of growing up in a very small town, but have decided to spare you the boredom. I suppose I'll start at the age that was a turning point for me. When I was sixteen, I wrote my first book...which was called "Aleric's Quest". In truth, the book was awful beyond belief, but it showed me that I could write a "whole" book and made me realize that writing was actually a lot of fun and something I'd be interested in as more than a hobby. By the way, if any of you ever get a copy of that first book...please burn it! *grin* I have no clue where it went. Let's see...I did work in retail jobs for a while, then went onto a job I loved as a jewelry sales associate, which led to an interest in gemstones, gemology and geology. Alas, once I learned that their where no accredited schools in my area, I decided that it wasn't the right occupation for me.

As for schooling, I attended Pennsylvania College of Technology for one semester with Psycology/Human Services as my major...however a difficult pregnancy made me to decide to finish with schooling for the time being. My first daughter, Samantha was born in March of 1992...and while I considered staying at home with her, it wasn't until my second daughter Alexandra was born that I gave myself permission to do so. Besides working inside the home, I also write...research...update my web pages including Rachel's Ramblings regularly and jumped on the bandwagon when I noticed that Spectrum Virtual University was offering free classes. SVU's classes allow me to gain knowledge that I might not otherwise have access to, for which I'm grateful.

Where do I picture myself in ten years? Have you heard of Stephen King, Piers Anthony, Ann Rice, Erma Bombeck? Any one of their writing careers would work out just fine with me! I'm not out for a Nobel Prize or anything, I just want to get published and am waiting for those manuscripts to be accepted! In the near future I'll include a picture from my wedding which is on July 20th, 1996. Wish me luck y'all!

Leow Yee Ling -Bio

I was born in the state of Selangor in Malaysia, a neighboring country of Singapore. After my birth, my parents moved to the state of Johore. Two years later, we moved to Singapore (after my brother was born) due to our parent's concern for our education. The main language taught was Malay, and in Singapore both English and your mother's tongue (Mandarin/Malay/Tamil) was taught. Our parent's just wanted to give us the best so that we would not have to "suffer" with what they had to go through.

I'm currently working as a software engineer who works on cordless telephones. My work involves software coding, system testing and de-bugging as well as writing of operating instructions. In my spare time I like to explore or see new things, such as traveling, hiking, swimming, tennis and scuba-diving. I enjoy going to the movies, watching LD's at home and taking walks at the park. My homepage, which includes a joke collection as well as a smiley collection can be found at the Leow Yee Ling Homepage.

In ten years, I picture myself probably still living in Singapore, but by that time, I wish to have a happy family. I love both my boyfriend and I love kids, but wish my boyfriend would pop the question faster! I haven't thought of how many children I'd like to have, but want a minimum of two. The standard of living is very high here and certain necessities are getting out of reach (especially housing). I really want to build a nice cosy home and help my husband to succeed in his future plans. For my career, I want to continue working, but am not sure at what though. Maybe as technical staff or moving over to management or perhaps even a totally different line. No matter which, I stay tuned to the technological advances...especially those related to the computer (my love).

In the meantime, I want to work on changing myself as a person. I need to open up-to get to know and start talking to people. I'm very quiet (maybe even shy). I also need to change my fashion sense. I have no sense of what to mix and match, and wear no makeup. I still prefer jeans and t-shirts, but am slowly changing in that regard. Learning more about writing web pages, has allowed me to express myself more easily in writing in general. Internet is all about exploration, and it's much easier to communicate behind the computer screen.

Jim Bourgeois -Bio

Born on the Caribbean island state of Trinidad and Tobago , I travelled and spent most of my after teens life in Europe and North America, settled as I am and have been for the past twenty or so years as teacher and VP at an elementary school, located in the 'Potato Capital of the World' in the only cold, wind-swept, but reedemingly beautiful island province of Canada, Prince Edward Island. Reading, gardening (when possible), walking, viewing Star Trek and X-Files and messing with computers occupy my spare time. Life being a celebration, my guiding word of wisdom is "(s)he who laughs, lasts." Ten years hence I should be retired, engaging in volunteer work and travelling, all the while waiting for a free trip through intergalactic space.

Becky Williams -Bio

I am a 44 year old married, perrenial part-time female student living in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I spend most of my time playing with my husband and computer (not necessarily in that order) when I am not studying for the particular class(es) I might be taking. When we got married, my husband and I made a pact, "no kids and no pets". I miss having pets. (Grin). I enjoy most kinds of music, but especially Clannad. I love all forms of science fiction, but prefer stuff that is humorous and/or contains computers, robots or androids as the main characters. I am also addicted to public tv, particularly British stuff. In ten years I suppose I will be doing the same thing since I am having so much fun with my life, but one difference could be (if I hit the lottery) I would be having all of this fun in Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is the place I truly long to be.

Rick Baldwin -Bio

Hi everyone! I'm Rick Baldwin and have lived in Royston, BC for the past 18 years. It's a small town on a very large island (Vancouver Island) in the Pacific Ocean, off the West Coast of Canada. The climate is one of the best around. In the winter, a person can golf, ski or play tennis on the same day and in the spring you can even swim.

I have a wife of 26 years (27 in August) and 3 wonderful girls. Our girls are avid swimmers and have been members of the "Blue Devils Swim Club" for several years. Together we share a small home on a 1/2 acre piece of property.

Two weeks before my 40th birthday, we decided to build an in ground swimming pool for the family. We asked my father (76 years young) to help with the project. (At the time he was feeling old and not very useful.) For 2 weeks we toiled from 8:00am until 6:00pm with the occasional rest for food and drink. My father was tireless and at the end of the project needed a rest. He and my mother traveled to the prairies to visit our "in-laws" and help them harvest their wheat. When they finally returned to the "Island" my father looked and felt 10 years younger. I think my father just needed to feel useful and wanted.

I graduated from high school and advanced my education at the University of Victoria (Arts & Science) and continued at the University of British Columbia (Faculty of Engineering). For most of my life I was in road construction and worked for the Provincial Government as a project supervisor until a large paving contractor convinced me to leave. After several years as Branch Manager of the North Island, I left road construction and opened Sandpiper Computers (an Apple Computer Store). The store was successful, but the customer base in the "Comox Valley" was small and profits were minimal. I eventually left "retail-sales" and opened Home Office Computer Networks Inc. specializing in computer network installations, support, service and training.

I have done many interesting things in my life ranging from flying to sailing. This winter our family will again "take to the slopes" and enjoy skiing on Mt. Washington. (It's a large local ski-hill about 45minutes from our home.)

I'm enjoying designing "THE ULTIMATE WEB PAGE" thanks to the class participation, nightly chats, and especially Paul's creativity and effort.

To all my classmates, if you're ever in town - please drop in and have a visit.

..Rick

Here is some information about the Comox Valley, the place where I live.

Cris Kutler -Bio

I guess I will start out my bio with the thing that takes up most of my time...work. As an applications development consultant, I provide the whole gamut of computer services including analysis, design, programming, user and technical documentation, and training.

I have developed a few basic web sites, nothing out of the ordinary. Only one still exists today -- http://www.pacific.net/~golf

I recently volunteered to do web pages for the Lymes Times (a non-profit organization that is helping to inform the public about lymes disease). I am hoping that I can use what I learn from this class to provide a site that will really help increase public awareness about this disease.

I am also working with two companies to help them put user documentation on their intranets. I am really excited about how web browsers enhance our ability to teach and disseminate information.

I discovered IRC chatting about 2 months ago and love it. My favorite chat room is the coffee house at Talkcity.

When I am not working or chatting, you can find me at the golf course. I find golfing a great way to get all those kinks out of my back that I develop while hunched over my computer. Because I walk the course, I also feel it is a great way to meditate and relax my mind.

My favorite charity is Canine Companions for Independence, which is a nonprofit organization that serves the needs of people with disabilities by providing trained service, hearing and social dogs. CCI is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities through the development of a human/canine partnership.

My husband and I have raised three puppies for CCI. It is a very rewarding experience. I encourage all of you who love dogs to consider helping them out.

As far as hobbies go, even that is tied in with the computer. When I first got on the internet over three years ago, I found that is was a great resource for searching for information about my genealogy. It is amazing how many contacts I have found that have helped me link my lineage all the way back to the 1600's. This hobby has also given me something to do whenever I travel on business. On my trips, I seek out nearby historical libraries to see if I can dig up more stuff about my ancestors.

Dianne McKenzie -Bio

I am Dianne McKenzie, and I am partners with John Halley of Comet Studios. We are currently living and working out of our studio on the Northern California Coast at Sea Ranch, although our design projects are located around the country.

Comet Studios is an environmentally conscious residential design firm that specializes in sustainable "green " building design and planning that incorporates solar design with innovative, energy efficient and cost effective solutions for new construction and remodels. We provide environmental planning and design for individuals and real estate developers, focusing on land analysis, feasibility studies, design strategies, and land planning / design for custom homes to merchant built housing. Our projects range from cabins to single family custom homes, estates and commercial residential developments. At the present we have created projects in the Southwest, Northwest, Midwest and in California, and hopefully soon, around the globe. Commissions have ranged from domestic objects, furniture, fountains, interior design to complete estates.

Prior to my career change into architectural design, I was working for almost 20 years as an artist, designing and weaving large tapestries for corporations and private collections . I have been working with Comet Studios since 1991. In 1995 we plunged our architecture studio into the computer age. Since then, we have immersed ourselves in learning as many necessary software programs, from ClarisWorks, PageMaker, Fontographer, Microsoft Word, QuickBooks, Freehand, Adobe Photoshop, Painter, Strata, Studio Pro, Design Workshop, Ashlar Vellum, Archicad, Artlantis Render, Virtual Reality Quick Time movies and exploring the Internet. During this last year and a half we have worked mostly 7 days a week 16+ hours a days, loving our work (and sometimes wanting to throw the computers into the ocean). It has been an intense learning period only to realize we have just started to scratch the surface. It is an amazing time to be alive and to participate in the technology. The most exciting part for me has been in learning to create architectural rendering and walk through Quicktime virtual realities of our client's projects. We are both very passionate about design and really enjoy our working together. We are beginning to explore the possibilities of joining up with other like minded firms to form an architectural alliance dedicated to environmental planning and design.

My personal goals for the next few years is to become more skilled with the architectural design and rendering, to further develop my artistic skills as a computer artist, to write and illustrate an interactive children's book based on the adventures of my two standard poodles Yogi and Iona, to spend more time out walking in nature, working more in the garden, traveling with my husband John and my dogs, and to continue my spiritual growth in the Buddhist tradition.

Although I haven't been able to actively participate much in the Spectrum Virtual University class #862 due to my dog, Iona's sudden illness, I have learned lots and really enjoyed the classmates participation and cooperation. I feel very grateful to be a tiny part of this group. I certainly hope to continue to participate in future classes and discussion groups.

Willy Williams -Bio

Hi my name is Willy Williams and I call Calgary Alberta my home. I am presently employed with the Geological Survey of Canada as a consultant. I was born in Salisbury England and emigrated to Canada in the 50's, we resided in Toronto for a couple of years, then moved to Vancouver BC for a while. Northern Alberta beckoned and off to wild and woolly north.

Early in 1970 I moved to Calgary and married Elaine, and had two children Scott and Lisa, both are in Universities, Scott studying Business Administration, Lisa in Environmental Sciences.

My hobbies include:
Internet, I seem to spend more and more times surfing at times I feel almost addicted although for a change I will FTP or Telnet around. Amateur Radio, this used to be my premier hobby (until the Net) I have spent many an hour listening for that rare radio station only to be in a gigantic pile up. All the world's ham operators are trying to contact the station as well. Along came email and now it's far more efficient for me to use that mode, most of my ham buddies are on the net also.
I have a couple of other pastimes such as Metal Detecting though there isn't much to find up this way, and Rock and Fossil hunting. Just south of us is a World Heritage Site, known as the Badlands, where there are great Dinosaur fossil beds. I attempt to visit a couple of times a year and I am always impressed with the level of excavation and science done there.

Now for why have I taken the Ultimate Web page course! I am hoping to have a better grasp of HTML at the end of this semester. Although the technical and creativity of my fellow group members makes course 862 "pass" I will stay with the course and see what develops.

Yah, sure, you betcha!

(click for 10K WAV)

Born in Perham, Minnesota in the mid-fifties, I grew up on a dairy farm in the Heart of Lakes region of west-central Minnesota. I graduated from Perham High School and moved on to study chemistry, biology, and vocal music at the University of Minnesota Morris campus. While working as a hospital orderly one summer, I met Brenda Ann, a "Svede" who became my wife the following summer. After earning a BA in Chemistry and becoming a father, the three of us moved to Minneapolis where I enrolled in the BSRN Nursing program at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. After completing of my fifth year as a fulltime student, I decided it was time to leave the role of a student to become an employee of the U of M, working as a lab technician in the Physiology Department of the Medical School. During this time, daughter number two joined us. After a year and a half of civil service, the private sector lured me away to become a chemist in the Burlington Northern Railroad's main testing laboratory in St. Paul, Minnesota.

To the Land of Ozark Mountain Country!

When the Burlington Northern Railroad merged with the former Frisco Railway, the St. Paul lab was packed up in Bekins trucks and my job was moved to Springfield, Missouri. It's third largest city in Missouri, and serves as the northern gateway to Branson, the New Capitol of Country Music (sorry, Nashville). It's a great place to raise kids; daughter number three was born here.

After a few years, I decided to supplement my chemistry skills with business training. After five years of night classes, and much understanding and support from my family, I received my MBA from Southwest Missouri State University. By the time I'd finished, the lab operation had been "spun off" from the railroad and had become a contract operation.

I am now the Manager of Environmental Services of Technical Services Laboratories, Inc. We're still at the same location as before, and the BNSF is now one of our many clients. My department assists customers by utilizing EPA procedures to analyze soil, industrial wastes, wastewater, stormwater runoff, and drinking water for contamination by hazardous materials.

What do I do outside of the lab? I'm the father of three very active teenage daughters! 'Nuff said? Serving as chaffeur to music lessons and school and church activities takes up a big chunk of our family schedules. I also participate in supervising the youth programs in our church, play in one of the handbell choirs, and sing in the senior vocal choir. I maintain the church's web page as a subset of my personal web page. I discovered the Internet about two and a half years ago, via ORION, our local Freenet connection. I now have a bona fide case of 'net addiction. To support my "habit" and rationalize the hours I spend online, I also freelance in web page design for OzNet. I've participated in the following projects:

Branson Magic Video
PFI Western Store Catalog
Ozark Tickets
Ozark County

What would I like to be doing ten years from now? I'd like to be able to make a good living by working with the Web fulltime. That's one reason why I'm in the Ultimate Web Page Class, to learn the additional skills necessary to achieve that goal. If you've got any suggestions, mail them my way!

Jean Stringer-Bio

I live in Hamilton, Ohio a small town with small town advantages and disadvantages..... Cincinnati is close by to offer a wide range of entertainment and opportunity.

Wife and mother for 27 years, children all grown so I am now in my second childhood... with the help of the most precious 2 1/2 year old grandaughter and her sister who is just 2 months old. I have spent the summer having quite a bit of fun redoing one of the rooms in our house into a toy room for us to play.. and of course there is a computer amidst the toys.

Ten years ago I joined the work force as a teacher's helper, and through volunteering my time to discover how the computers in the school would print, became the computer guru. This is not saying much as we had Apple IIe's and a basic book and a few drill and practice pieces of software. The adminstration took a chance on my desire to learn more and more about the machines and formed a computer lab, putting me in charge. The students and I have since learned technology is a never ending learning experience.

That discovery is the reason I joined the other munchkins in this group and hid amidst the flowers until I was secure enough to venture onto the Yellow Brick Road and learn many of the new things I can't wait to take back to my students of this comming school year.

To teach by example I must continue to learn, modeling the goals I believe in... I hope to lead students and others to the realization that just because the machine CAN do something does not mean it Should. The children I teach will be part of the work force of tomorrow...I hope I instill in them the desire to always follow the right paths..

My experience of the internet has always been friendly and helpful, I hope it stays that way. That it leads to a better world...

I invite you to visit my students school page which is dedicated to Peace of the World, not just around the globe but with the person next to you, which is sometimes harder!

The people in this class are a grand example of the greatness the internet has to offer...in the physical world few of us would have met...yet in the land of cyberspace so much is possible.

Thanks to all in this class, who have helped me learn all I wanted to learn this summer, to share with not only the students I teach, but teachers throught the area. My students foster my desire to keep current with technology. This desire has brought invitations to become a guest speaker and workshop presenter at local Universities, and schools.
